Emma is a fully accredited BABCP Cognitive Behavioural Therapist.
With over 13 years’ experience, Emma has worked within a wide range of mental health settings including forensic services, inpatient wards and community mental health teams. She currently splits her time between working in a busy primary care mental health team in the NHS and her private practice.
Emma’s core profession is as an Occupational Therapist which provides a holistic base for her therapy.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a psychological therapy designed to gain understanding of difficulties through considering the relationship between how our thoughts and behaviours can affect how we feel. Ultimately we are interested in considering how a difficulty is maintained and what changes need to occur in order to improve how we feel.
CBT has a strong evidence base, often recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) with depression and anxiety disorders such as; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), social anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), health anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Through an initial assessment Emma will aim to gain an understanding of your difficulties in order to consider if CBT could provide a suitable way of working. Whilst CBT can be an effective short term treatment (6-20x sessions) the length of treatment will be considered collaboratively between Emma and yourself and may be informed by the chronicity or complexity of the difficulties.
In recent years Emma has trained and developed interest in other approaches such as Mindfulness and Trauma Sensitive Yoga, including her own practice, which she is hoping to keep working on and bringing into her therapy in order to offer her clients a more integrative and versatile approach.
She has a particular special interest and advanced training in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).
Compassion can be understood as‘A sensitivity to suffering in self and others with a commitment to try to alleviate and prevent it’.
Emma developed this interest personally and then professionally noticing how useful it can be particularly to those with a very critical inner voice or painful emotions such as shame and guilt. Through witnessing how damaging these processes can be Emma wanted to explore alternative ways of both understanding and reducing them.

Advanced Clinical Skills in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) – Prof. P. Gilbert, Derby
Trauma Sensitive Yoga – Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY), Boston, USA
Various CPD workshops and training courses in order to maintain standards and accreditation.
